How to Clean and Care for Your Mabkhara: The Complete Maintenance Guide

A quality incense burner is an investment — and like any investment, proper care ensures it lasts for years, even decades. Whether you burn bakhoor daily or only on special occasions, regular maintenance keeps your mabkhara looking pristine and performing beautifully.

🔥 After Every Burn: Basic Care | بعد كل جلسة بخور

Before you do anything else, always let your mabkhara cool completely. Never attempt to clean a hot burner — sudden temperature changes can crack ceramic or cause burns.

  1. Remove residue: Once cool, use a small brush (an old toothbrush works perfectly) to sweep out ash and spent bakhoor from the chamber.
  2. Wipe down the exterior: A soft, dry cloth removes fingerprints and dust from the outside. For metal pieces, a microfibre cloth gives the best shine.
  3. Empty the tray: If your burner has a removable charcoal tray, empty it completely each time. Old ash absorbs moisture and can cause rust in metal trays.

  1. Mix warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
  2. Dip a soft cloth — never abrasive scrubbers — and gently wipe the surface.
  3. Use the toothbrush for intricate lattice patterns, going gently to avoid scratching the finish.
  4. Rinse with a damp cloth (no direct water immersion — this accelerates tarnishing).
  5. Dry immediately and thoroughly with a soft cloth.
  6. For tarnished gold-tone pieces: A tiny amount of metal polish (Brasso or similar) on a cotton ball, applied gently, restores the shine. Wipe off completely and buff dry.

Ceramic | السيراميك

  2. For stubborn bakhoor residue inside the chamber, soak a cotton ball in isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and gently rub the stained area.
  3. Never use harsh chemicals — they can dull the glaze permanently.
  4. Rinse with clean water and pat dry.

Resin | الراتينج

  1. Resin is porous, so avoid soaking in water.
  2. Wipe with a slightly damp cloth — no soap needed for routine cleaning.
  3. For residue, use a soft brush to loosen, then wipe with a dry cloth.
  4. To restore the surface sheen on matte resin, a small amount of olive oil on a cloth, buffed in circular motions, works beautifully.

Wood | الخشب

  1. Never expose wood to water or humid environments — this causes warping and cracking.
  2. Wipe with a dry or barely-damp cloth only.
  3. Apply a light coat of furniture wax or beeswax once a month to preserve the finish and prevent drying.
  4. Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.

⚡ Electric Burner Maintenance | صيانة المبخرة الكهربائية

Electric mabkhara (like our YXY Electric Leaf or Arabic Plug-In Censer) require special care:

  1. Always unplug first before any cleaning.
  2. Wait until completely cool — the heating element retains heat for several minutes after unplugging.
  3. Wipe the heating disc with a dry cloth to remove bakhoor residue while it's still slightly warm (but not hot). Hardened residue is much harder to remove when completely cold.
  4. Clean the exterior ceramic or metal body with a slightly damp cloth.
  5. Never immerse the base in water — the electrical components will be damaged.
  6. If the heating disc gets heavily stained, a cotton bud (Q-tip) dipped in rubbing alcohol cleans it effectively.
  7. Check the power cord periodically for any damage — do not use if the cord is frayed.

  • Keep away from perfumes, hairsprays, and cleaning chemicals — the vapours can affect some finishes over time.

  • ⚠️ Wobbly base: Check if feet have loosened or if a rubber pad has fallen off. Usually an easy fix.
