Bakhoor vs. Oud: Understanding the Difference
Share
Two of the most beloved fragrance forms in the Arabian world — oud and bakhoor — are often confused, even by those who have burned them for years. While both are used in the mabkhara and both derive their soul from agarwood, they are quite different in form, composition, and the experience they create.
Pure Oud (Agarwood)
Pure oud refers to raw agarwood — chips, shavings, or small pieces cut directly from the Aquilaria tree's resinous heartwood. The finest oud comes from trees that have naturally produced resin over decades in response to fungal infection. Hindi oud, from India, is known for its deep, earthy, almost leathery character. Cambodi oud, from Cambodia, offers a sweeter, more floral profile. Assami oud, from the Assam region of India, is considered by many collectors to be the rarest and most complex.
When burned, pure oud produces a relatively delicate, evolving smoke — the scent changes as the wood is consumed, revealing different facets of its character. It is the choice for those who appreciate subtlety and authenticity.
Bakhoor: The Blended Art
Bakhoor (also spelled bukhoor or bakhur) is an incense blend in which agarwood chips are combined with other aromatic ingredients — rose water, musk, amber, sandalwood, essential oils, and sometimes floral extracts. The resulting mixture is then dried and pressed into chips or small cakes.
Because bakhoor is a crafted blend, it can be engineered to produce specific olfactory effects: heavier and more intoxicating, lighter and more floral, or rich with oud at the center and surrounded by supporting notes. It is typically more affordable than pure oud, and its complexity makes it ideal for home fragrancing and hospitality.
Which Should You Choose?
If you are new to Arabian incense, bakhoor is the more accessible starting point — its blended nature means the fragrance is more immediately recognizable and consistent. For those who already love oud and wish to explore its natural character in its purest form, raw agarwood chips offer a meditation-like experience of gradual unfolding.
At OUDMA, we offer both — carefully selected so that whichever path you choose, you encounter only the finest.
